Azymuth is a Brazilian jazz-funk group that started in 1973 as a cover band called Grupo Seleção. They changed their name to Azymuth, inspired by a song by Marcos & Paulo Sérgio Valle, and released their first album in 1975. They became famous for their fusion of samba, funk and jazz, which they called "Samba Doido" or "Crazy Samba". They had several hits, such as "Linha Do Horizonte", "Melô Da Cuíca", "Jazz Carnival" and "Dear Limmertz". They also collaborated with many artists, such as Ana Mazzotti, Marcos Valle and Jürgen Seefelder. They moved to the United States in the early 1980s and signed with Milestone Records. They continued to release albums on Far Out Recordings in the 1990s and 2000s. The original trio consisted of José Roberto Bertrami on keyboards, Alex Malheiros on bass and guitars, and Ivan Conti on drums and percussion. Bertrami died in 2012 and was replaced by Kiko Continentino. Conti died in 2023 and was replaced by Renato Calmon. Malheiros is the only surviving original member of the group.
